Infection with E. Coli 0157:H7 can lead to a serious, potentially deadly condition, known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS is a secondary condition usually caused by E. coli 0157:H7 that destroys red blood cells and causes renal failure. E. Coli 0157:H7 is a particularly virulent strain of the E. Coli bacteria.
Infections with E. Coli 0157:H7 are especially dangerous to children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. E. Coli 0157:H7 can also cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
Can you still eat it if it’s baked? Or this is the cause if you eat the cookie dough by itself?
Mamie, thank you so much for visiting our blog. Baking the cookies will probably kill the bacteria; however, another concern is cross-contamination. If the cookie dough carries the bacteria, then everything the cookies touch can become infected with E. Coli 0157:H7, including your counters, your hands, utensils, etc. The cookie dough container can also carry E. Coli. Each of these items can then transfer the bacteria onto other surfaces and foods, causing you to become sick. It only takes a very small amount of the bacteria to make you ill.
E. Coli 0157:H7 is a particularly virulent strain of the E. Coli bacteria. It can also cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a dangerous secondary condition that destroys red blood cells and causes kidney failure. Infection is most dangerous to children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems; however, E. Coli 0157:H7 and HUS can ravage even the healthiest of adults. Be safe and follow the FDA’s recommendations to avoid contracting E. Coli 0157:H7. Thanks for your comment & good luck out there!
