The FDA expanded its nationwide alert to consumers about tainted weight loss products containing undeclared, active pharmaceutical ingredients. The FDA has identified additional weight loss products (Herbal Xenicol, Slimbionic, and Xsvelten) and new undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients (fenproporex, fluoxetine, furosemide, and cetilistat). The current list now includes 72 products. This is a complete list of the dangerous weight loss drugs.
The FDA may pursue criminal action against several companies that produce these over-the-counter (OTC) weight loss supplements because these companies are refusing to take their dangerous diet pills off the shelves.
So what’s so dangerous about these weight loss pills?
Here’s the list of some of the undeclared, active pharmaceutical ingredients and what’s so dangerous about including them in these pills.
Meridia: This is a prescription drug with side effects that include, abdominal pain, acid indigestion, anxiety, back pain, constipation, cough increase, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, flu symptoms, headache, increased appetite, insomnia, joint pain, loss of appetite, loss of strength, nasal inflammation, nausea, nervousness, painful menstruation, rash, sinus inflammation, stomach ache and sore throat.
Rimonabant: is a unapproved drug in the U.S. The drug, which is approved in Europe, has been associated with increased risk of depression and suicidal thoughts and has been linked to five deaths and 720 adverse reactions in Europe over the last two years.
Phenytoin: is an anti-seizure medication that is not approved for use over-the-counter, and may actually be found in these OTC diet pills in higher dosages than found in the actual prescription seizure medications.
Phenolphthalein: is a suspected carcinogen that is not approved by the FDA for human consumption.
Sibutramine : is a controlled substance that can cause high blood pressure, seizures, tachycardia, palpitations, heart attack or stroke.
