A new study by Duke University researchers has raised questions about the safety of the popular artificial sweetener, Splenda.
The study showed that when fed to rats, Splenda appeared to destroy good intestinal bacteria, lead to weight gain and prevented prescription drugs from being absorbed by the body.
The study was funded by the Sugar Association who claim they had no input or influence into the study’s findings.
McNiel Nutritionals, makers of Splenda, maintain the safety of their product. More research will need to be done in order to determine if Splenda has the same effects on humans.
